Our Purpose
Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery
Our organization helps the greater San Marcos community understand the functions, resources, and services of the San Marcos Cemetery. We help raise funds and provide assistance in order to improve the facilities and services of the San Marcos Cemetery while encouraging, recognizing, and supporting volunteers who assist the San Marcos Cemetery Commission with ongoing projects. We work to encourage public support of the cemetery through education, memorial donations, endowments, bequests, and monetary donations for the beautification and enhancement of the aesthetic environment of the cemetery.

Cemetery History
The Original San Marcos Cemetery was located on Hutchison Street where the former San Marcos Library building still stands at 310 W.Hutchison. The first burial was in 1846, and the property would become the official “City Cemetery” with William Lindsey’s donation of the land for that purpose. Within 30 years, a new site would be needed to accommodate the growing community.
The San Marcos City Cemetery, founded in 1876, is the burial ground for many Texas pioneers. Veterans buried here represent all wars dating back far as the War of 1812. This isn’t the site of the city’s first cemetery. After the old site was outgrown and the current site was acquired, many relocated the bodies of their loved ones here.
One of the beautiful things about this place is that it represents the final resting place for local residents of all races, religions and ethnicity. There are heroes and scoundrels; there are statesmen and college presidents; there are infants and centurions.
There are Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians and perhaps a few atheists scattered over these hallowed grounds.
